Renovation

The Church of St. Laurence, reputedly founded by Lady Godiva and originally thatched, goes back to Norman times. People have worshipped in this place for almost 1000 years and continue to do so.

Our forbears built St. Laurence starting nearly a thousand years ago and generations have maintained it, sometimes with great difficulty. We in our turn are now doing the same.  For many years the roof of the church was leaking and in urgent need of repair. We have just completed major work to rebuild the roof  and now must do major restoration work to the tower, the bells and the tower clock, and a beautiful stained glass west window in the tower.  We also need to renew the old and broken down heating system.

We’re well aware that we’re just another Church in Britain desperate for financial help, but we hope and pray that you will have understood from all the other information on this site, that St. Laurence, Meriden, is a beautiful Church, in a striking setting, in a special location in the centre of England, with a long history, and an important future in continuing to serve the community, providing for its baptisms, weddings and funerals in addition to regular weekly worship and other services.

We continue to work on raising the money. Some of the the funding has been secured and we are working on securing the rest as soon as possible so that the work can be undertaken.

Over and above the grants we need initially £115,000 to restore the crumbling stonework of the tower; this is the first stage of the work. Donations are always welcome and can be made online by clicking the 'Donate' icon at the foot of this page or elsewhere on this website; or please use the Contact Form to find out how you can donate in other ways.

We are developing special gallery pages to show you the detailed figures for restoring the tower, the bells, the west window, the clock and the heating system.  However, £115,000 is the figure to restore the crumbling stonework of the tower; this is the first important stage of the work now as the tower holds the bells, the west window and the clock on which a secure and restored tower depend.

Figures are changing from time to time, as costs come in and make them worse but generous people help us and make them better, so we will update them frequently.

So please help!
Thank you
